EnfermagemAbstract
Objective: to understand how primary health care nursing teams provide care to the transsexual population, identifying difficulties, knowledge gaps, and training needs. Method: qualitative, exploratory study conducted in a primary health unit in Santo André with 12 nursing professionals. Data were produced through semi-structured interviews, audio-recorded, fully transcribed and analyzed using Bardin’s thematic content analysis. Criteria for reporting qualitative studies were considered in manuscript preparation. Results: Four categories emerged: confusion between gender identity and sexual orientation; performance of Pap smears in transgender men; providing equitable care and using social names; and recognizing the incipient knowledge about the care and rights of transgender people. Conclusion: conceptual and institutional weaknesses still compromise equitable care, reinforcing the need for continuing education.
