Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationship between antidepressant use and the increased risk of suicidal ideation in adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: Systematic literature review according to the PRISMA protocol. Results: Twenty-four articles were included, highlighting a high prevalence of depression and anxiety in women with PCOS, especially adolescents. Evidence suggests that some antidepressants, due to their anxiogenic effects, can increase the risk of suicidal ideation, which is especially concerning in this group, which already has an up to eight-fold increased risk of suicide. Conclusion: Antidepressant selection should be judicious, considering the specific risks of each drug class. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, have shown efficacy in reducing fatigue and improving quality of life, reinforcing the importance of combined therapeutic approaches.
