Abstract

Objective: To assess the symptoms of presbyphagia in active elderly individuals and their impact on quality of life. Methods: A total of 186 participants were included, comprising 93 active elderly individuals from a community center and 93 university adults. Those with neurological, gastric diseases, dysphagia, abnormal occasions in MMSE, and BOMFAQ scale were excluded. The mean age was 72.3 years for the elderly and 24.8 for adults. Participants completed a questionnaire on eating and swallowing, as well as the WHOQOL protocol (bref version). Results: Presbyphagia symptoms included difficulty in chewing, swallowing saliva, tablets, thin liquids, dry solids, and dual consistency. Despite the symptoms, the quality of life for the elderly was better, except in the domain of social relationships. Conclusion: Even healthy elderly individuals exhibit symptoms of presbyphagia, but the impact on quality of life was not evident, possibly due to natural adaptation to aging.
